BOYS AND GIRLS, GET SET FOR A FUN TIME AT SINGAPORE SPORTS HUB!

BOYS AND GIRLS, GET SET FOR A FUN TIME AT SINGAPORE SPORTS HUB!

Fun holiday activities await the young ones at Singapore Sports Hub. Photo by Singapore Sports Hub.

The March holidays are a much-needed break from schoolwork. But that doesn’t mean your kids should spend the entire time staring at a screen. Head down to Singapore Sports Hub for an array of activities that will keep children entertained, help them to relax and even teach them a thing or two.

SPARK INTEREST IN A SMASHING SPORT

Table tennis is a fun, easy-to-understand sport that even young kids can enjoy. Bring the family down to Singapore Smash 2023 at OCBC Arena between 11 and 19 March for an exciting introduction to the game.

Organised by World Table Tennis, this cannot-be-missed event features top-ranked athletes such as returning champions Chen Meng and Fan Zhendong, who are competing for US$2 million in prize money and 2,000 world ranking points.

Outside the competition, there’s the Singapore Smash Park that offers live entertainment, food and beverage stalls and player-engagement activities. Kids can get up close and personal with tournament stars through autograph and meet-and-greet sessions.

CATCH A LIVE PERFORMANCE

Favourite Disney characters and stories are brought to life through the artistry of ice-skating. Image from Singapore Sports Hub.

You won’t have to tell your teenage children that Harry Styles is coming to Singapore – chances are, they already know. Award yourself “favourite parent” status by taking them to the international pop superstar’s concert at the National Stadium on 17 March. Part of Styles’ Love on Tour 2023 series, the one-night-only performance is expected to draw hordes of fans who would – to quote one of the Brit’s biggest hits Adore You –  “walk through fire” for him.

Younger siblings won’t miss out, either. From 11 to 19 March at Singapore Indoor Stadium, catch the ice-stravaganza, Disney on Ice Presents Mickey and Friends. Kids will marvel anew at their favourite Disney songs, stories and characters – from Moana and Frozen to Cinderella and Finding Nemo – interpreted through graceful ice-skating routines.

PICK UP A NEW GAME TO PLAY

If you’d like your kids to be a little more active – or you’re looking for a way to burn off their excess energy – check out the selection of sports facilities at Singapore Sports Hub.

Kids can attempt their first skateboarding move at Sports Hub Skate Park, or learn to dive like a pro with OCBC Aquatic Centre’s Learn to Dive programme. If bad weather hits, there are plenty of indoor facilities, such as netball, volleyball, basketball and badminton courts, not to mention a well-equipped gym for those wanting to embark on a fitness journey. When it comes to trying out a new sport, Singapore Sports Hub is your children’s ultimate playground to explore.

SPLASH OUT IN THE SUN

Enjoy the Lazy River together as a family. Photo by Singapore Sports Hub.

When it’s time to cool off, hop into the Lazy River at Splash-N-Surf. Open from 8am to 9.30pm, Monday to Sunday, the attraction is a great place for kids and parents alike to unwind, as you float down the looping stream on inflatables admiring the city skyline. The 1-metre-deep water is shallow enough for the younger ones (with adult supervision), making it perfect for family outings and kiddie playdates.

Older and more confident kids can head to Water Sports Centre, where you can rent canoes and kayaks to explore Kallang Basin. Be sure to keep an eye out for the local river otters while enjoying a new way of “water play”. Do remind your children to adhere to safety guidelines and slap on plenty of sunscreen.

FIND INNER ZEN AT THE ONSEN

While we tend to associate onsen baths with older people, kids can benefit from a good soak too. Yunomori Onsen & Spa at Kallang Wave Mall is a little piece of Japan in Singapore, with nearly 1,500 square metres dedicated to the art of relaxing in hot mineral-rich waters.

Children as young as three are welcome to accompany their parents at the onsen’s 11 different pools, such as the Bubble Bath, Jet Bath and Silk Bath. (You may have to explain to your young ones that the Soda Bath doesn’t consist of actual soda – it’s carbon dioxide-enriched hot spring water, intended to tighten the skin.)

For stressed-out mums and dads, there’s also a selection of massage and spa treatments to unknot even the most tensed-up muscles.

TAKE A WALK THROUGH HISTORY

Learn about our nation’s rich sporting history at the Singapore Sports Museum. Photo by Singapore Sports Hub.

Give your children a history lesson that’s nothing like the ones they have in school. Start by tackling the 3-kilometre-long Sports, Arts and Heritage Trail, which comprises three scenic sections.

The Waterfront Trail is where kids will learn more about the communities that once called Kallang Basin home, while the Stadium Trail takes them on an exploration of the National Stadium’s storied past. The Park Trail revives the good old days of Kallang Park and the old Wonderland Amusement Park before concluding at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

When your feet are tired, step into the Singapore Sports Museum for a breather. Open from 10am to 8pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 9pm on weekends, the museum is packed full of local sporting memorabilia and interactive stories from our nation’s top athletes, past and present. Who knows? Your kids might just be inspired to walk in the footsteps of our sporting legends.
